Yes, very deliberate. It was a response to the first half of S5, where Sam had the Orlin thing, the Narim thing, and the Joe Faxon thing. I kept wanting someone on the team in canon to at least say 'Wow, Sam you're having a really crappy time. Have a cookie' but no one did. So the fic came about in part because of my frustration at the lack of resolution there was about the emotional impact on Sam of those events. But I feel better now. :)
