I don't know if it's so comforting because it's a part of our past/childhoods or if there is just something inherently comforting about it because the Doctor is always ethical and decent and always does the Right Thing. Or even if it's just because they are so absorbing and inventive (for the most part) that an episode of Doctor Who is pretty much a guarantee of being taken out of oneself until the end credits roll.
