Scary Computers...

As someone whose CD-ROM drive is stuck closed and won't open so is unusable I am even more freaked than usual about a friend's PC having a meltdown and her possibly losing all her data. I've had a PC with a faulty processor in the past and lost all my work, some of which wasn't backed up on a floppy disk (this was before I had a CD-ROM and I hate being in that position again). I've looked into external CD-ROMs but they all seem to involve having more USB ports than I do and also downloading the Windows XP Packs, which last time made my computer crash constantly, so which I now avoid. I think that despite being a technical Luddite I am going to have to learn how to post my stuff on my LJ so there is an online back up if my PC pitches one of its periodic hissy fits. I know it's not well as it crashes every time I open a Word file over a certain length, which means everything I write has to be done in bite-size pieces and fitting the third book of the Pixies together is going to be like doing a jigsaw puzzle. I'm crossing my fingers and toes that my friend gets her data back and in the meantime am really glad I have her fic on my HDD. But it's the vid files and the music files and the picture files and all those little articles and emails that you keep in my documents that are so hard to lose too.
